WAV stands for Waveform Audio File Format (also known as Windows Audio at some point). This is a standard established in 1991 by Microsoft and IBM.

Many people think that all WAV files are uncompressed audio files, but this is not the case. WAV is a Windows container for different audio formats. This means that WAV files can contain compressed audio, but they are rarely used for this purpose.

Most WAV files contain uncompressed audio in the PCM format. WAV files are simply wrappers around the PCM encoding to make them more suitable for use on Windows systems. However, Mac systems can usually open WAV files without any problem.

With FLAC, you only need to specify a compression level between -0 and -8. Lower levels result in faster compression, higher levels result in smaller file sizes. Ogg Vorbis: The Vorbis format, often known as Ogg Vorbis thanks to its use of the Ogg container, is a free and open source alternative to MP3 and AAC. Its main advantage is that it is not limited by patents, but this does not affect you as a user: in fact, despite its open nature and similar quality, it is much less popular than MP3 and AAC, which means that less players support it. WMA: Windows Media Audio is Microsoft’s proprietary format, similar to MP3 or AAC. Actually, it offers no advantage over other formats and is not even supported. There is very little reason to copy your CDs in this format.
