Video format: AV1
AV1 is an open source video compression format called AOMedia Video 1. Since it is a codec in development as a successor standard to VP9, it seems that VP9 videos will eventually be replaced by AV1, but it will take time to replace them because the only supported browsers currently are Chrome and Firefox. .

Postscript 2020/4/23: Confirmed to apply to some videos.

Postscript 2020/2/11: It looks like Opus audio was finally created for all users’ videos.

Please refer to the article linked above for how to upload in high quality.

To check after upload, right click on the video about a day after upload, click “Detailed Statistics” and check the value of “Codecs”.
At this time, be sure to use a browser other than “Safari”. Safari is not compatible with Opus.

Success story: Codecs vp09.00.51.08.01.01.01.01 (243) / opus (251)
Failure example: Codecs avc1.4d401e (134) /mp4a.40.2 (140)
The video / audio codecs are listed in order. (In this case, the video is vp9 (243), so it is 360p in WebM format, and the audio is Opus (251), so it is 128Kbps video in Opus format.)

Depending on the video, more than 30 videos can be generated in one video.

YOUTUBE SOUND QUALITY AND PICTURE QUALITY (AS OF JUNE 2021)

YouTube Audio

This time, I investigated the sound quality and image quality of “YouTube”.

youtube audio

HOW TO UPLOAD TO YOUTUBE WITH HIGH QUALITY SOUND

Basically YouTube uses “H.264 AAC-LC” or “Opus” as the audio codec.
The video codec used is “H.264” (MP4) or “VP9” (WebM). “AV1” is also used in some videos.

Verification method
(Video) Download the official video of “3D Youtube Downloader”, upload the video to “VLC Media Player” and refer to Media Information → Input Bit Rate in Statistics.
(Audio) Check the audio of the video downloaded by the above method using “foobar2000” for the bit rate. The cutoff frequency is converted to .wav format by “XMedia Recode”, and the file is imported into “WaveSpectra” and verified.

● PC
The PC version of YouTube ranges from 144p (320 x 180) to 4K (3860 x 2160), but there are differences in the image quality that can be selected and the audio that can be played depending on the browser.
You can check if your browser supports it on the next page.
YOUTUBE SUPPORT BROWSER

The following is the support status for each browser (browsers that support both VP9 and MP4 have the highest picture and sound quality).

Internet Explorer (Windows 8.1 / 10) Only compatible with MP4 (not viewable)
Safari on Macintosh Only compatible with MP4

Depending on your browser, you may only have one or two video formats to choose from. We recommend that you update your browser or operating system to enjoy watching the video comfortably.

The following is an example of a browser and operating system combination that supports the video format for high-quality YouTube videos.

Google Chrome (all operating systems)

What sound quality (bitrate) do YouTube videos have?

YouTube, in addition to being the most popular video platform in the world, is also widely used as a platform to listen to music, since it is free and we can find virtually any song. If we listen to music on a quality computer or headphones, we can see that the sound quality is limited, but how much?

youtube audio

YouTube has changed the sound quality of its videos in recent years

Until a few years ago, YouTube offered various sound qualities depending on the resolution at which we were watching the video. In 2013 it was possible to have up to 192 kbps in videos that were uploaded with 720p resolution or higher, and between 2013 and 2016 the maximum quality stood at 256 kbps. Unfortunately, YouTube changed its policy, and today the sound quality in the videos is lower.

Specifically, the maximum sound quality that we can currently obtain from YouTube is 128 kbps, even if we download the video in 4K. The reason behind this is that the best sound quality for YouTube Red is saved. Subscribers can also access the “maximum” quality of Google Play Music with 320 kbps. Other services such as Tidal offer maximum sound quality in FLAC format without compression, which reaches more than 1,000 kbps.

youtube music

128 kbps is the highest quality if we download music in MP3 or AAC from YouTube

In order to determine the sound quality, we have used 4K Video Downloader, which allows us to select the “Original” sound option when downloading a video from the platform in MP4 format. Thus, we have been selecting different video resolutions, and we have obtained the following results:

2160p: 128 kbps
1440p: 128 kbps
1080p: 128 kbps
720p: 128 kbps
480p: 128 kbps
360p: 96 kbps
240p: 48 kbps

With this, we see that someone who is watching something in 480p with mobile connection is getting the same sound quality as someone who is watching a 4K video at home with fiber optic connection. With this policy, YouTube seeks more users to subscribe to YouTube Red, but the truth is that few will do so, since 128 kbps is the minimum that can be required of the sound to hear it in an acceptable way. The format used by YouTube for sound is AAC.

However, if instead of viewing the MP4 version of the video and we are watching one in WebM with Opus sound (only the most popular are encoded as well), the sound quality goes up to 156-160 kbps. The problem is that most of what we see is as much in MP4, and what we download from websites and programs that allow you to download MP3 from YouTube, regardless of the quality that we put, will be at most 128 kbps. If you want to have a higher quality, you can try to check the description of the video, since many channels usually put links to download the song in 320 kbps.

Older videos, usually prior to the introduction of HD on the platform, have a much more limited sound quality. A song in 480p and 360p from 2011 back has a quality of 96 kbps, and 64 kbps for 240p.
