What is video resolution?

You need to better understand resolution to create videos that are easy for users to see.
Resolution is a term that indicates the density of pixels in a moving image. The resolution is freely selectable and there are various types.

In this article, we will present in detail the scheme and types of resolution, and the advantages and disadvantages of high resolution.
Use it for your own video production.
What is resolution?
The resolution of a video is one pixel, which is expressed by the number of pixels in the vertical and horizontal directions of the video.
Specifically, there are “1280 x 720” and “1920 x 1080”, and the higher the resolution, the higher the number of pixels, and the image looks beautiful. For example, in the image of a fruit represented by “640 x 360” and the image of a fruit represented by “2560 x 1440”, the latter is more detailed, so it looks more beautiful.
The number of pixels is the total number of vertical and horizontal pixels.
If the resolution is “1980 x 1080”, the number of pixels will be “2,138,400”. When delivering video over the web, this resolution has a significant impact on user visibility.
Therefore, it is necessary to set it to an appropriate value.
Resolution type
Resolution type
There are different types of resolution.
The resolutions used in the video are as follows.
・ 256 × 144 (144p)
・ 427 x 240 (240p)
・ 640 × 360 (360p)
・ 720 x 480 (SD)
・ 1280 x 720 (HD)
・ 1920 × 1080 (FHD * 2K)
・ 2560 × 1440 (1440p)
・ 3840 x 2160 (UHD * 4K)
・ 7680 x 4320 (SHV * 8K)
Also, YouTube recommends a resolution of 240p to 2160p, but in reality this resolution is common and commonly used.
However, when the resolution is actually 400p or less, the image quality seems a bit uneven.
Therefore, it is better to set 480p or higher as a guide.

Advantages and disadvantages of high resolution.
The advantage of making the video high resolution, as I mentioned earlier, is that the image quality is better and easier to see.
However, it does not necessarily mean that the resolution is high.
If you set the resolution higher than the resolution that can be displayed on the screen that plays the video, the image quality with the set resolution cannot be played back. The higher the resolution, the larger the size of the video file.
For example, suppose the resolution is 1080p and the file size is 1GB.
If it is set to 2160p with the same image quality and length, the screen area will be quadrupled and the file size will be 4GB.
The larger the file size, the slower the transfer of video data, and if the user is using a smartphone, the amount of data communication tends to be consumed. Therefore, it is important to set the resolution taking into account the file size as well.
How to check the resolution
You can easily check the resolution of the video by downloading the video to your computer.
For Windows 10, select the video from the “Details Window” on the Explorer ribbon.
The video details window will be displayed, so let’s check it out from there.
If the width of the frame is 720 and the height of the frame is 480, the resolution is “720 x 480”.
