Difference between AVCHD and MP4

Recording format functions and supported camcorders
It was common to shoot footage recorded on special days, such as seasonal events and school events, but recently, more and more people are considering recording for Vlogs on Youtube and SNS.
Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the video recording format. There are various video recording formats and depending on the video you recorded, you may not be able to post it to SNS or the image quality may deteriorate and you may not be able to do what you want.
In this article, we will introduce the features of AVCHD and MP4, which are the two most typical recording formats, and the typical camcorders that support the recording formats.
AVCHD (Advanced High Definition Video Coding) is the name of the full high definition video recording format (FHD, 1920 x 1080) established by Panasonic and Sony in 2006.
This standard uses MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 for video compression and Dolby Digital (or linear PCM) for audio.
Recommended for burning DVD and Blu-ray discs
AVCHD is a standard created to record / play high-definition video using 8cm DVD discs, making it suitable for storing high-quality video data on optical discs such as DVD / Blu-ray discs.
On the other hand, it is a recording format that cannot be transferred from a video camera to Wi-Fi or played on a smartphone or tablet, so keep in mind that it is not very versatile as a video file.

The AVCHD standard (.mts) is the only recording format for JCV Kenwood’s “Everio Series”, which has abundant waterproof video cameras. (GZ-RY980’s 4K mode is .mov)
You can transfer it to your smartphone using the dedicated app, but note that you cannot freely edit it or send it to multiple devices as an MP4 file.
Sony and Panasonic support AVCHD and MP4
With the exception of JVC KENWOOD, most camcorder manufacturers, including Sony and Panasonic, who created AVCHD, sell products that support the AVCHD and MP4 recording formats.
If you want to change the recording format according to the purpose of the shot, it is basically better to compare it with other manufacturers than JVC.
What is MP4?
MP4 is a recording format developed based on Apple’s QuickTime (.mov) file format, which is used for streaming distribution in addition to playback / recording / editing on various devices. It is an easy to edit recording format.
Since MP4 can reduce data capacity, it can be attached to emails and transferred over Wi-Fi.
4K support for XAVC S compatible models
XAVC S
“XAVC S” is a high-quality video format developed by Sony and is an MP4 file format.
You can record up to 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) and high bit rate up to 150Mbps, but the frame rate is basically 30p (60p products are professional and very expensive), so with a terminal 4K compatible Without it, the resolution appeal cannot be transmitted. It will be converted to FHD (1920X1080p) / 30fps on Youtube etc, so it is not recommended.
Until 4K terminals become mainstream, we recommend recording with AVCHD or MP4, which can record in FHD (1,920 x 1,080) / 60fps.
