LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) was een patent van Unisys totdat het patent in juni 2003 afliep, deze methode werd gebruikt voor GIF-afbeeldingen. Vermeldenswaard is ook de LZR (LZ-Renau) methode, die de basis is van de Zip methode. De LZ-methode maakt gebruik van een op tabellen gebaseerd compressiemodel, waarbij tabelinvoer wordt vervangen door herhaalde gegevensreeksen. Voor de meeste LZ-methoden wordt deze tabel dynamisch gegenereerd op basis van de initi\u00eble invoergegevens. Deze tabel wordt vaak onderhouden met Huffman-codering (bijv. SHRI, LZX). Een actueel, op LZ gebaseerd coderingsschema dat goed werkt, is LZX , dat wordt gebruikt in het CAB-formaat van Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>De beste compressietools gebruiken probabilistische modelvoorspellingen voor rekenkundige codering. Rekenen coderen is uitgevonden door de Finse informatietheoreticus Jorma Rissanen en omgezet in een praktische methode door Witten, Neal en Cleary. Deze benadering maakt een betere compressie mogelijk dan het bekende Huffman-algoritme en is zeer geschikt voor adaptieve datacompressie, waarbij voorspellingen contextgevoelig zijn. Rekenkundige codering is gebruikt in de JBIG binaire beeldcompressiestandaard, de DejaVu documentcompressiestandaard.
