Low sampling rate,<br \/>\nwhich distorts the wave of the original sound<br \/>\nB. High sampling rate,<br \/>\nwhich perfectly reproduces the wave of<br \/>\noriginal sound<br \/>\nTo reproduce a certain frequency, the sampling frequency<br \/>\nit must be at least double it (Nyquist theorem).<br \/>\nFor example, audio CDs have a sampling rate of 44.100 Hz,<br \/>\nso they can reproduce frequencies up to 22.050 Hz, which are hardly found<br \/>\nbeyond the limit of human perception of 20,000 Hz.<br \/>\nThe following table shows the most common sampling rates for<br \/>\ndigital audio.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bit_depth\"><\/span>Bit depth<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The bit depth represents the number of bits used to store a<br \/>\nsingle digital sample.<br \/>\nWhen a sound wave is sampled, each sample is assigned<br \/>\nthe amplitude value closest to the original wave amplitude. A depth<br \/>\nin high bits it provides as many amplitude values \u200b\u200bas possible, which results in a<br \/>\ngreater dynamic range (the difference in decibels between the maximum volume that the component can sustain without<br \/>\ndistort the waves and the background noise it produces), lower and higher background noise<br \/>\nfidelity.<br \/>\nFor example if you use 8 bits you have 256 possible values \u200b\u200b(28<br \/>\n) that, being<br \/>\nrelatively few, offer less sound quality than a<br \/>\ntape; if instead 16 bits per sample are used, 65536 values \u200b\u200bare obtained<br \/>\npossible (216).<br \/>\nThe most common examples are the audio CD, recorded in 16 bit, and the DVD, which<br \/>\nsupports up to 24 bit depth.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Compression_formats\"><\/span>Compression formats<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hand in hand with the advent of digitalization, multimedia applications have<br \/>\nthey are increasingly widespread until they become commonplace. One of<br \/>\nmultimedia features is certainly the use of digital audio<br \/>\nvowel and sound. The biggest obstacle associated with digitizing audio is<br \/>\nthe large size of the files that are produced, which puts them at<br \/>\nsector operators (especially those linked to the internet) the problem of<br \/>\nreduce the space occupied by the data to obtain the double advantage of:<br \/>\n\uf0b7 save in terms of memory occupation;<br \/>\n\uf0b7 save in terms of transfer time on the network.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, speaking of digitizing the audio, it is necessary to speak<br \/>\nalso of data compression techniques. The compression techniques of the<br \/>\ndata, of whatever nature they are, are divided into:<br \/>\n\uf0b7 lossless: compress data through a lossless process<br \/>\nof information that takes advantage of redundancies in data encoding<br \/>\n\uf0b7 lossy: compress data through a lossy process<br \/>\nof information that takes advantage of redundancies in the use of data.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lossless_formats\"><\/span>Lossless formats<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lossless compression formats are more suitable for archiving rather than<br \/>\nto reproduction, since most of them require complete<br \/>\ndecompression before they can be played.<br \/>\nOne of the most common lossless compression formats is FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lossy_formats\"><\/span>\nLossy formats<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lossy compression formats use compression algorithms capable of<br \/>\ndrastically reduce the amount of data required to store a sound,<br \/>\nguaranteeing however an acceptable and faithful reproduction of the original file uncompressed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Sound is a continuous signal.
